After I had stupidly turned in the trinket with my main, I kept it with all the following chars, hoping for the quest to be finished one day. If you have an old Essence of Eranikus, it will still provide this quest post-Shattering, however there is no longer a Font in the room with Shade of Eranikus so it can't go anywhere.
